Strive to Drive Newsletter- August 2021

We can’t believe it’s already September and it almost feels like Christmas already! Or are we just excited? ? Before we get to that, check out our highlights for August!

Interview with a Paralympian ?

Perfect timing for the start of the Paralympics and the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Brad and Ali of the Drive-ABLE Podcast interviewed Liesl Tesch MP and couldn’t help but be blown away. We talk about the times she represented Australia and the Australian Paralympic Team. A fantastic interview!

Driving with Autism

Nathan was diagnosed with the Autism Spectrum, and this month, he had passed his task 30 with a 93% pass. We first started lessons with Nathan exactly 2 years ago he has developed into a safe and confident driver.

Riannah was also diagnosed with the Autism Spectrum and she happily passed her PS test. We first started working with Riannah November last year. She has become a safe, defensive, confident driver and is looking forward to being independent.

Congratulations!

Do you need a spinner knob?

Not all assessments are done once. This assessment was to assess the ongoing need for a spinner knob and she successfully proved that she had recovered to a point that the spinner knob was no longer needed.

Keep this in mind if you have suffered an injury.

Quality First!

A great new install for a client today with this quality engineered, Australian standard, electronic left foot accelerator.

This product meets all engineering and road/vehicle design standards. Make sure you check with your installer to make sure your products have a certificate to say they meet Australian Standards and that it has been certified by an engineer.

Motorcycle Assessments

Motorbikes can have so much meaning to a rider. The freedom experienced is something that I can only imagine.

But when a disability impacts freedom, it can be very depressing. At Williams OT we assess drivers, but also riders and we try to find ways to overcome issues so riders can experience freedom again.

Happy Birthday Rommy!

Time to celebrate!

Happy special birthday to our operations manager. Rommy, you are a rockstar.

Sorry for the surprise, not

Can-Am Spyder tricycle

It has been a long journey, but we might almost be there.

We have just tested a Can-Am Spyder tricycle. It is great for people with balance issues but still want the enjoyment of riding a motorcycle.

Do you need to know if this is right for you?

Vaxxed and Ready to Go!

All of Williams OT Occupational Therapists have now been vaccinated. One step closer to kicking COVID-19 out of the picture! ??

Education Day

The first photo is of Brad teaching the Masters in OT students about technology in driving.

The second photo is a professional development program we have with our OTs upskilling and learning about driving with disabilities. This time with handcontrols.

Community Mobility

If you’re looking for a scooter to help with getting out and about in the community, but also small enough to fit in the boot, check this out.

We love the self fold function. And we can add a lifter to your boot to do all the heavy lifting.

Wheelchair Life

This week we renovated a very tired wheelchair access van. The lifter was falling apart and had been welded back together, the tie downs were set up for kids chairs and there was no shoulder strap seat belt. In fact, we don’t even think it had a seatbelt

Now the van is ready to do another 100000km, is safe and appropriate.

From Horse Power to Person Power

Congratulations Darren!

He now holds a GOLD ? and SILVER medal! ? WOW!!!
He got the gold medal in the 25km pursuit

We first met in 2014 when you were wanting to ride a powered bike. Now you are winning medals at the Paralympic Games with the Australian Paralympic Team under your own power.

And for the people who want to know, he drives a manual with his above the knee prosthetic. Here’s a quick video on how he does it, click here to watch https://youtu.be/AMsE0ryPkzU

Drive-Able Podcast

If you have noticed, Ali Akbarian from Mobility Engineering and I have started a podcast called the Drive-Able Podcast where we interview and discuss with people from all walks of life including people with disabilities, those who have experience with vehicle modifications, fellow Occupational Therapists, people who have dealt with the NDIS, and many more
